Living Waters and Clean Water University
The need for potable water all over the world including areas of the United States is enormous. It has been estimated that close to one fifth of the world’s population lacks access to safe drinking water. Inadequate and unsafe water, sewage contaminated and disease-carrying water, affect close to one billion people resulting in over three million deaths a year.
In recognition of the gravity of this almost unnoticed calamity, First Presbyterian has begun participating in Living Waters for the World, a mission project of the Synod of the Living Waters of the PUCSA. Currently, we have sent one member to attend the training of Clean Water U in Oxford, Mississippi. However, he is already scheduled to become a trainer himself. This fall we expect to send at least two other trainees.
Living Waters for the World is a project where anyone who is interested can participate regarding of interest and skill level. The project can use installers, instructors on how to run the water purification system, and educators, those who teach people about the need and benefits of using clean water.
Participation in CWFTW requires attending Clear Water U at Oxford, MS, for one week including travel time. During this week participants engage in a simulated experience where all aspects of the project are taught. Those who choose to educate are trained in dispensing health, hygiene and spiritual information to the people affected. Others learn how to install and run the water purification system. An interesting aspect of Clear Water U is that many participants from the countries selected to receive the water purification systems attend the training at Oxford. They go back ready to maintain and run the system as well as prepared to teach others about the benefits of clean water and how to purify water on a continuous way.
